How To Safely Clean Vertical Blinds Of All Types
Larger windows and patio doors need coverings that not only function to block out light and provide privacy, but also add style and elegance to any room. Vertical blinds provide all these elements for your windows and rooms. They also need to be cleaned from time to time and this involves a measure of patience and work. There are safe methods of cleaning them that will preserve their beauty.
The materials used to create blinds vary with such material as fabric, aluminum, vinyl, and wood. Each of these materials only needs common household items such as soap and water or a common household furniture cleaner to look like new. White blinds can also be cleaned using bleach, however use a mild solution, as bleach can be corrosive if used excessively.
Vertical blinds are easy to assemble and can be taken apart with ease for cleaning. You can clean them as they hang as well, but you will need protective gear for the area you will be cleaning in so as not to damage carpeting or special flooring. The window also should be protected to avoid streaks and other unsightly marks.
Vinyl and aluminum materials only need soap and water to remove the dirt and grime that often gets collected on them. A sponge will be enough to do the scrubbing, as you do not want to use anything abrasive to clean blinds. Work from the top down so that all dirt is moved in one general direction. After cleaning rinse with clear water and dry completely.
Wooden blinds do need to be dusted. Soap and water are usually not recommended for these types of window blinds. Instead use a furniture polish or wood oil to clean them, preferably a type of polish that repels dust. The oil based product will cause your wood blinds to shine like new again and make them stand out.
If cloth or fabric is your material of choice for blinds, you can clean them easily by throwing them in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and use mild detergent. Before you toss them in however, some fabric blinds come with a weight attached to the bottom to make them hang properly. This will need to be removed first so as not to damage it. After they have been washed allow them to hang dry. You never want to put them in the dryer because this will cause damage.
Vertical blinds can maintain their showroom quality if they are cleaned frequently. The only difficulty in cleaning them is, it is time consuming. However, if you dust them regularly, you should have no problems in keeping them looking good. Use the vacuum cleaner and a blind cleaning attachment for this purpose.
Always read what your warranty states about the care and use of your blinds, and follow the company’s recommendation. Never use any solutions on your blinds that have the potential to damage them, and remember to clean them often.
